I am a road bike rider only. I like Rock "N" Roll chain lube. I get extremely long life from my chains (one went over 9,000 mi.). I use the red variety and apply it about every 300 mi. This lube is a lube and cleaner in one, so I clean my entire drive train every time I lube the chain. Everything stays pretty clean in between lubes/cleanings. The secret is to wipe ALL the excess lube from everything (chain, pulleys, chainrings, and cassette). The dirt will come off with the excess lube.

    Regards,

    Jerry

I'm a big fan of Prolink. You can't it everywhere (they sell it at ClassCycle in Novato, CA), but it's great great stuff. Same advice, wipe the excess off. I love the smell of triflow, but it's not real good for dusty conditions.

    Hi can anyone help?
ever time i lubricate my bike i wreck my brakes. I've tried taking the pads out but the oil sill gets on the disks is there a good way to stop this happening?

When does one lubricate the chain? After every wash?

I suggest you thoroughly clean and lube you chain to get an idea how smooth it feels when riding and when you wind the pedals back by hand. That gives you a baseline of smoothness. When I start to feel the chain isn't running close to optimum smoothness, particularly up hills, I'll clean and lube the chain. I'll also clean and lube if the chain is dirty. Many people lube after so many km's but it depends where you are riding - every 500km is a rough guide. If you ride in the rain you will need to lube much sooner, say every 100km. I'll often clean the chain, then wash the bike, then re-lube. If you don't feel you are washing the lube out of the chain when washing then lubing and washing are independent. Everyone has their own recipe but at the end of the day you have to use a bit of common sense.

There's info on the web how to clean and lube chains.

I spray my chain with WD 40 and wipe it down immediately just about every ride. I use a chain cleaner with kerosene in it every 300 km. and then do a proper lube with Tri-Flow lubricant with a Teflon additive. I ride mostly on dirt tracks and bridle trails in the Himalayas of northern India

Are you using WD 40 as lube or cleaner? Just asking b/c its not at all lube.

Motor oil , low viscosity. Tried lightning, rock n roll blue and red and prolink these are good
but dont work for as long as oil or in my opinion lubricate as well.
Major problem with oil: it picks up dirt if you ride in dusty conditions and if you overdo it it sprays everywhere.
But I clean my chain with kerosene every 150km and the bike as well so what
spray there is gets cleaned off. Soon I'm going to try some greases and see how it
compares. All of these are generally lowish cost items and can be bought in
small quantities ( or borrowed for an application or two from riding colleagues)
so try them and see what you like. Thouroughly clean the chain
    before trying a new product

    All

I use the cheapest oil I can find for my road bike as I only use it at the weekends really and it gets cleaned when it comes back for a ride and re oiled. I use Halfords own, the one in a silver can. I have also used olive oil when I have ran out of 'normal oil'

I use a weather proof oil for my hybrid as this gets used daily in all weathers, again though it is cleaned most weekends and re oiled.

I really dont think that oil matters that much unless you are a. doing lots of miles or b. a pro rider riding at phenominal speeds.
